Welcome to West Virginia! The Mountain State, where the Appalachian peaks rise in quiet majesty and the spirit of adventure greets you at every turn. From the winding roads of the New River Gorge, to the peaceful trails of the Monongahela National Forest, this land invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and discover the natural beauty and warm hospitality that make it feel like home.

Are you feeling outdoorsy? Experience world-class whitewater rafting on the New River or, if you’re looking to fuel your adrenaline, visit the Gauley River, nicknamed “The Beast of the East,” with twelve miles of over forty rapids. Visit Blackwater Falls State Park to see the famous 60-foot waterfall and enjoy scenic trails. Hike or backpack and see the unique high-elevation landscape, but remember to stick to the trails.

If you find yourself in Point Pleasant, remember to keep your eyes on the skies — you might just catch a glimpse of the legendary Mothman, the mysterious winged guardian of local lore who’s been watching over these hills for decades. Located downtown is a stainless-steel statue dedicated to the creature just outside the Mothman Museum, which houses historical documents, clippings, and memorabilia related to the sightings.

While most see Mothman as a guardian, some may want to challenge him to a friendly boxing match.

If you would like to test your grit with this winged giant, try these helpful tips.

  1. Tip 01

    Clear your mind

Mothman is said to warn people of coming disasters, therefore seeing danger coming. In some terrible movies, he can even read minds. If you plan your attack in your head before carrying it out he will drop you before you enter the woods. Instead, clear your mind. Maybe think of something completely unrelated like a dog running on a beach, or a tortoise on a skateboard. This way he will know danger is lurking but he won’t know from which direction.

  2. Tip 02

    Blind, deaf, dead

This creature sees and hears all with heightened supernatural senses. His eyes are said to contain not only night vision, but a hypnotic gaze that, if fixed on you, can cause psychological stress. Try luring him in with a strategically placed lantern. Once close enough, pop out and spray him in the peepers with a big can of Raid and turn the boom box you had hidden in the bushes up to deafening levels. While disoriented, you can attack with all you’ve got.

  3. Tip 03

    Grab some popcorn

If you’re feeling nonviolent, might I suggest inviting the beast to a movie night? Lay out the snacks and kick back with a VHS copy of The Mothman Prophecies starring Richard Gere. You won’t have to attack him because 30 minutes in he’ll be pounding his own head against the wall.

Friend or foe, we can all agree the Mothman is a magnificent creature that only adds to the beauty and wonder of West Virginia.

Enjoy your stay and remember, stay on the trails.
