Japanese Cryptids: Tsuchinoko, Kappa & the Blue Blanket Murders
Show notes
What’s going on, guys — welcome back to the Conspiracy Kitchen. If you’re new here, hit follow so you don’t miss the next plate. Japanese cryptids. Japanese folklore. Yokai. And a documented Japanese true crime that is still an unsolved mystery. **Tsuchinoko** — the bottle-thick “mallet child” snake. Higashishirakawa’s May hunt drew about 800 people in 2024, 2025, and 2026. The prize is now about ¥1.34 million. Still unclaimed. Documented hunt. Not a captured animal. **Kappa** — yokai river-child. Folklore: drowning danger, water in the dish on its head. Toriyama Sekien’s 1776 illustrated yokai books helped lock the look. The cute mascot is later media. **The Blue Blanket Murders (Ao-getto)** — documented crime, not a yokai. Night of February 11, 1906, Mikuni, Fukui (now Sakai City). A man hidden under a blue blanket lured Kaga Murayoshi, his mother Kiku, and his wife Tsuo into a blizzard. Two bodies from the river. Murayoshi never found. Statute of limitations 1921. Still unsolved. Conspiracy Kitchen: Josh and Joe. Japanese folklore, Japanese cryptids, yokai, and the official story that doesn’t sit right. Follow for the next plate.
